How to Gain Merchandising Experience

A frequently asked question I usually get about merchandising is how to get experience without having had the job title yet. There may not be a definitive answer, but I have a few tips that have helped me and continue to help me as a merchandiser today.

I never understood how entry level jobs could deny someone with no experience a job when they’re trying to gain experience by applying for said job. The only way to have experience is to get experience. So here are some resourceful tips that will help lead you towards a successful merchandising path.

Get a Job in Retail

You have to start somewhere. Not every retailer will allow you to work your way up within the company, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room to grow. A lot of the times, you’ll have to gain experience form multiple companies, but that’s a good thing! You’ll grow with each job, learning more and getting different hands on experience.

Read Books!

Books are such a wonderful and affordable resource. I’ve been reading a handful of merchandising (and marketing) books that have taught me so much about merchandising in the fashion world. There are many I would highly recommend, you can check them all out here.

Network, Network, Network

With each job you grow from, don’t forget to network! Keep contacts and important people close by, that way you can both help each other grow in your career. Also, don’t be afraid to make new connections, a lot of the times people might know people who are looking for someone to fill the position you’re wanting!
